The Mt. Carmel Mobile Mammography Unit visited our Pickerington orthodontic office earlier this month! The unit is actually a bus, outfitted with all the necessary medical equipment for a breast exam. The bus is operated by the Mount Carmel Foundation.
Our practice manager and marketing director, Alison, was among the women scheduled for an exam. She also spoke with an NBC4 news team that was doing a piece on the mammogram bus and the woman who runs it. You can check out the clip from NBC4 below!
The bus makes rounds to much of the Columbus community, not just Kristal & Forche Orthodontics. Some of the most important work done by the bus is at food banks and other underserved places around the city. Many uninsured women benefit from The Mt Carmel Mobile Mammography Unit.
Hundreds of women would not be screened for breast cancer without this bus. Because the need is so great for this kind of service, the bus is booked a year in advance!
Women can get examined and screened in just 10-15 minutes. An appointment is required so that the service is able to run a tight schedule and see as many women as possible.
The American Cancer Society recommends women ages 35-40 receive a baseline mammogram with a script. Women 40 and over should receive a mammogram every year.
There are a few requirements for receiving a breast exam on the Mt Carmel Mobile Mammography bus:
- Must be at least 40 years of age
- Does NOT have any current breast health concerns
- No unusual palpable breast lumps
- Has NOT has any breast surgery the last 12 months
- Has NOT had a screening in the last 12 months
- Needs a baseline mammogram
- Physician’s name required when scheduling
